Following the emotional session, Mrs. Dukakis called it "intolerable that anyone else in our society should [contract] AIDS because of ignorance," referring to the Reagan administration's failure to take a strong stand for explicit, non-judgmental education programs. Many public health experts have said these programs are the only effective means to combat AIDS.

Finally Gay T.V.

by K.D. Mahnal

Video television will soon take an exciting and innovative twist in 1989, when Gay Television (GTV) kicks off programming designed for lesbians and gay men. GTV is the brain-child of Kay Masters, a Palm Beach County, Florida, publicist.

"There are 26 million gay people in the U.S. and no one is programming to them," said Masters. "GTV is going to do just that."

GTV will be the first to provide an avenue for the gay community to share ideas, information and contacts on a national level.

The basic concept of GTV is to distribute two 30 minute shows each week to gay bars and resorts nationwide via United Parcel Service, instead of the traditional airwaves. The cost to subscribers is $500 a month, with discounts available if more than one month at a time is purchased. Masters expects gay clubs to pop GTV into their VCRs as a promotional tool during weeknights and slow periods.

"I know that GTV will increase my weeknight business and certainly cover the nominal affiliate fee charged by GTV," said Deb Carter, manager of Myster Systers, a popular women's bar in Lake Worth, Fla.

GTV recently casted for many of its shows with overwhelming success. "GTV held a casting here recently and if their TV programming is only half as good as this casting call, GTV will be a shot heard around the world," said Carter.

GTV will offer two game shows and four regular shows. The games shows will be "Partners and Lovers," similar to the "Newlywed Game," and the "Mating Game," similar to the "Dating Game."

"Cruisin'" will include video tours of gay establishments nationwide.

"Dears," a sitcom spin-off of the hit series "Cheers," is a humorous but authentic representation of th needs and issues of the gay community, with interaction between gays and straights.

"GTV News," a program widely accepted by gay leaders throughout the country, will report on the gay communities in each respective

area.

"Sneak Preview," a 2 and onehalf hour video of gay programming, will be GTV's initial offering.

Other programs in production include various entertainment specials, including "The Gays of Our Lives," and "Biz-Net," a nationwide gay business network.

Response to GTV has been astronomical. One of the world's largest gay corporations is considering sponsoring and underwriting the project. A drug company in Southern

California and a major gay-oriented travel company have offered similar support.

In addition, "We've been approached by a group of television investors who want to take us public, numerous video distribution firms and bars that want to be part of GTV," said Masters.

"GTV News" has hired some correspondents to work for GTV on a regional and statewide level to cover the United States. Minneapolis will have Brad Theissen, publisher of the Twin City Gaz and producer of the cable television program "Lifestyles." Chicago will count on actress Lee Chandler and Seattle will engage Jeff Resta.

"The gay community needed something positive to happen and GTV is it," said Chandler.

"I think the issue of AIDS has started some planks in the bridge between the gay community and the straight community," Masters added. "We just hope to keep building that bridge that's already started."

A simultaneous premiere is planned, with gay establishments across the country popping "Sneak Preview" into their VCRs at 9 p.m. Jan. 12. All proceeds from this premier will go to the nationwide fight against AIDS.

For more information, write to GTV at Box 31325, Fairchild Gardens Ave., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. 33410-7325. Or phone (407) 6240044. ▼
